The Cardinal Bird Feeder - What Works Best?

The intention of a cardinal bird feeder, of course, would be to attract the cardinal. This bird, of course, is probably the single most popular bird for backyard bird watchers. However, to the dismay of many, there really is no cardinal feeder per se. But, the bird certainly has both feeder and seed preferences. Let's take a look!

First, what doesn't work that well.

The tube feeder is quite popular. However, don't make the mistake of thinking it a favorite of the cardinal. I've been watching birds for years and years and I can tell you with complete certainty that this is not your best choice for the cardinal. He has virtually no neck and is forced to turn his whole body sideways to eat from a tube. In addition, he's just a smidgen too big for most perches.

Some people will advise you to add a tray to the bottom. Granted, you will see the bird more often if you do this. Just keep in mind that Droll Yankees trays fit Droll Yankees tube feeders; Aspects trays fit Aspects tube feeders; Bird Quest trays fit Bird Quest tube feeders.

Do you know which brand you have?

Also, keep in mind that trays attract lots of other birds like grackles and starlings. If these birds visit your tube feeder, you won't see many cardinals (or any other birds for that matter). Keep in mind the purpose of a tube feeder is to provide for small birds like the tufted titmouse and Carolina chickadee.

Add a tray, in come the medium and large birds, away go the small birds-just like that, you've defeated the purpose of the tube.

So what does work?

A proper cardinal bird feeder is any feeder whose design accommodates the cardinal's preference to "bend at the hip" or not at all when feeding. You want a feeder that doesn't force the bird to turn its body. A basic hopper feeder is a great choice as a cardinal bird feeder. So is any fly-thru bird feeder (a fly-thru feeder is open on all sides and has ample space). Also, platform feeders on the ground are ideal cardinal feeders.

There are manufacturers of feeders who describe their product as "cardinal feeder." The no-no is one such example. Though this feeder does accommodate the cardinal, be careful! Many bird feeders do not do what the manufacturer claims.

The Droll Yankees squirrel proof feeder called the whipper is designed to be a cardinal feeder. The curved perch is a fantastic innovation that accommodates the bird perfectly. The Brome Care "squirrel buster" squirrel proof feeder, with its detachable ring, also serves the bird, though the bird does not appear as comfortable on this feeder as he does on the whipper (make no mistake, though, the Brome Care Product is equal and even superior to the Droll Yankees product in many ways).

Seed

What seed should you feed the cardinal? Hands down, safflower. This is a bitter tasting seed that squirrels, grackles and starlings tend not to eat.

If you don't have these pests floating around, any quality bird seed will do. Black oil sunflower seed and sunflower hearts (chips) are favorites of the cardinal. He'll eat most blends, too but don't use big box blends--they're full of filler that birds don't eat.

I've seen cardinals eat fruit--you'll need a fruit feeder for this.

So, what is my favorite cardinal bird feeder?

You know, my advise to bird watchers desiring to attract cardinals to "get back to basics." I recommend either a wooden hopper feeder or a fly-thru platform feeder serve as their cardinal bird feeder.

If you follow this advise and are patient, I promise that you'll be visited by this beautiful bird year round!

Fatal anatomy 2 catastrophe theme

lyrics and fatal frame 2 ending song. Please leave a comment or a rate and here is the lyrics. Underground in the cellar, I continued digging a hole Without knowing where the hole was going to With a shovel wet with earth in one hand, I was searching for your arms I pieced together a patchwork happiness As I planted my seeds, I was crushed by your strength The scars on my palms that won't come off Burn, burn Breaking through the gap in the clouds stained red by torn wings See how well I fly I wonder if the eternity that I pictured while trapped in a cocoon Is now a flower blooming somewhere The morning will soon bring back the dark night Stealing away my vision I believed That by groping along in the moonlight, I'd find you in the place where things tangled and overlapped The promised land to which we cannot return Burns out, burns out Running over the earth stained black by torn pain See how well I fly If I shout and yet can't be heard, I want to be destroyed at your hands While I can still be called "me" Your arms that held me back turned to soft dust And I just silently looked up at the sky The scars on my palms that won't come off Burn, burn Breaking through the gap in the clouds stained red by torn wings The promised land to which we cannot return Burns out, burns out See how well I fly

Shake it Off and Step Up

I heard this old story recently and though the message was especially relevant to small business owners, especially in tough economic times.

There was a farmer had who had a very old donkey. One day, the donkey slipped and fell into the well. The farmer looked down into the well and realized there was nothing he could do to lift the donkey out of the well.

He decided it would be far kinder to put the donkey out of it's misery quickly, then to let it slowly starve to death.  He asked several of his neighbors to help him shovel dirt into the well, thinking they would bury the animal alive, and it would die quickly.

At first the animal howled as the dirt began to fill the well, but after a few minutes there was silence.  The farmer peered over the rim of the well, and was amazed by what he saw. Every time a shovelful of dirt hit the donkey's back he shook it off and took a step up on the dirt.  Shovelful, after shovelful of dirt  fell into the well and onto the donkey.  And each time the donkey shook it off and stepped up until eventually there was enough dirt underneath the donkey that he could climb out of the well by himself and trot off into the field.

The moral to the story is very simple.  Life is going to shovel dirt at you.  You have two choices:

You can be buried alive by the dirt life throws at you

or

You can shake it off and step up

If you want to be survive a down economy and be truly successful in a rebounding one you have to keep moving, shaking off the dirt life throws at  you.

2 Raccoons 1 Cat Confrontation Standoff

One self confident cat is confronted by 2 raccoons. She stands them off, although they are larger than she is. However, they are on her territory and don't want to cause too much trouble. It is interesting that the second raccoon bows its head to the cat as if to ask permission to continue. This same gesture is also often seen in whitetail deer. The raccoon didn't stop at this, though, It continued over to the bird feeder and helped itself (next video) Raccoon Bird Feeder-What happened to the feed? www.youtube.com The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is also sometimes called the coon. It is a widespread omnivorous North American mammal. Raccoons live together in small loose groups. They are forest animals, but can also live in urban areas. They can be huge- the largest found weighted 61 lbs. They typically are large and can weight over 35 lbs. and be a yard long. They have a black "bandit's mask" around the eyes and their coat is a mixture of brown, grey, and black. They can be albino. They are highly intelligent, have manipulative hands, and wash their food (as shown here).

Fun Amboina King Parrot Information

The first thing you will notice about Amboina King Parrots (also known as Moluccan King Parrots) is their vivid coloration. They have green wings and a bright red body with a blue back. Next, you will notice their confidence shining through their cage. They sit up straight and they are not afraid of obtaining and keeping your eye contact much longer than most other parrots. As you get closer, you might notice the Amboina start to talk with its sweet, gentle voice. At that point, you will probably be sold on this parrot, but then you will look at the price tag.

These birds are quite expensive because they are threatened and the demand for them is very high. So high, in fact, that you may not be able to find them in the pet store. Luckily, they can be bred in captivity, so even if we completely destroy their natural habitat (God forbid) we will still be able to keep the species flying around. If you are the entrepreneurial type, you might want to look into getting a male and female Amboina and start your own Amboina King Parrot business.

This will take a little work and research though. These parrots can be difficult to breed and you have to make sure that you get both a male and female parrot (obviously). What is not so obvious, is the difference between the genders. The only reliable way to tell them apart is with DNA tests, so you will have to have those performed before you commit to a couple.

Experts believe that it takes between 12 and 30 months for the Amboina to become sexually mature. You can tell when they are sexually mature by looking at the area around their eyes; it will change color from whitish grey to black.

Using Glass Bird Feeders

If you have decided that you want to put a feeder for the birds into your garden you may feel that you want something different than the standard types. Anyone can have a tube feeder or the more common platform bird feeders. Perhaps you are looking instead for a glass bird feeder. These are a more elegant, and often more expensive, type of feeder. Still, it may be your preference to have something a little different, a little more stylish that makes a statement instead of just a bird feeder sitting in your garden. They are also good to have because they tend to last longer than other feeders, are less likely to disintegrate with the elements and will not rot.

The only thing is if you choose one of these their care is a little more complicated than that of the other kinds of feeders. Glass bird feeders need to be cleaned more often since the bird mess will cloud it quickly. Therefore they must be taken down every few days and washed. The best way to do this is to only put in enough food to last a few days. Then when it is emptied clean it. Some people suggest having a second feeder so that you can always have one hanging up. Cleaning one of these feeders should be done with good strong bleach. If that is what you use you need to be certain you rinse it extremely well so that there is nothing in the feeder that could make the birds ill. The smell may also be strong enough to cause the birds to steer clear. It is therefore recommended that you let the feeder air for a couple of days before putting it back into use. This may seem extreme but if you want to use bird feeders made of glass these are the steps you need to take.

One other benefit of glass bird feeders is that they seem to attract more birds than many of the other kinds. Perhaps it is being able to see the other birds so clearly when they are feeding or maybe because these are often colorful. But, whatever it is if you hang one of these in your garden you will get to enjoy bird watching out your window.

Yang Homes in New Estates - Harmonious Chi Gardening

Driving around through suburbia to see how the other half lives (more likely the other half per cent), one need go no further than cross the bridge onto Sovereign Islands Estate, Gold Coast, Queensland in Australia. Homes start here about $2ml and go up to about $10-15ml. Owners from a diversity of backgrounds and not all older retirees. Many quite young and still active in their professions.

Yet a trend on the new releases of the Estate is emerging. Home construction and landscaping has definitely turned towards the insular, dominant in-your-face structures and very Yang. Represented by huge overpowering angled structures of rendered concrete block and glass. Homes walled from the street and gated and landscaping resembling that of a dry desert climate (Yucca, Cordyline, Flax, Dracaenas and Ponytail Cycad to name some common plants in use). Gardens set amongst pebble, stone and pavers. No doubt relating to water restrictions and salt laden winds, but different in appeal to older more established residences on the Island where tropical gardens and palms abound.

Yet behind these walled gates internal gardens are more personal with use of topiary, figurines, clipped hedging and water features. Liriope and Buxus hedging bordering pathways. Formal and still dominantly Yang. I'm observing a deliberately Yang exterior camouflaging a Yin interior and personal domains. The owner wanting to lock out the outside world at their entry.

Many of these gardens are designed and constructed by professional landscapers modeling their personal style and choice of plant material. The gardens are them and not their owners and appear to bolt themselves onto the exterior of the house.

Yet these same gardens possess good Chi enhancement qualities. For example, they are healthy, not cluttered, offer diversity in shapes and colours, many follow curved lines, symbolism and water is present. They lock out external influences (the Sha Chi) and all homes back onto fresh flowing water.

I'm not trying to degrade these gardens. Some represent the best landscape practice on offer. Yet some present themselves as impersonal and is that a Yang trait?

Could harmony be instilled into surroundings where the owner chooses not to be? I say no. Maybe temporarily and that depends on the interest and connectiveness of the person maintaining it. I would advise the owner to find time and stamp something of themselves in their garden.  Get a pet dog.  For the birds, plant some flowering shrubs or an Australian native. Taking time out to visit a garden centre and share the coffee and scones with a plant or two to take home and finding somewhere to put it. Buy a shovel, watering can or a bag of mulch. You know, leave the kids playing ball in there somewhere.

Unfortunately these Yang styled gardens tend to remain picture perfect gardens and symbolise wealth, place and authority over their surroundings. The gardens are deliberately non personal, hopefully because of time constraints and not because the owners don't want any part of their inner personality seen for public display!

How to Use Platform Bird Feeders

Amongst the many types of bird feeders that you can choose the most common, and easiest to make, are the platform bird feeders. This type of feeder has a flat tray like base with short sides that are only tall enough to keep the bird food from falling out. It should also have a roof to it to keep the food dry in case of rain or snow. It also needs to have some holes for drainage in case it does get wet. You do not want puddles to appear in the seed you are feeding to the birds. One way to avoid this is to use a wire screen bottom instead of having to put holes in a wooden or metal base. This takes care of any water problem.

If you are trying to attract a lot of birds then the placement of these feeders is very important. You will have more luck if they are not out in the open with no cover. The kinds of birds that will be attracted to platform bird feeders will be happier if the feeders are in a more secluded spot. Putting them in amongst the bushes, trees and shrubs will be much smarter. Evergreens are a good choice to offer this security as they are also great for protection from windy weather. But, despite the need to put the bird feeders in an area with lots of trees for protection, they cannot be too close or the birds could become easy prey for cats. As well, the bird food might become a treat for animals like squirrels that can jump from the trees to the feeders. Therefore, you should try to put them in a treed area but at least ten to twelve feet away from the trees themselves. Remember, this type of bird feeder is more likely to attract other creatures since there are no sides to protect the seeds or other foods against squirrels, chipmunks or other rodents.

Having a platform bird feeder can prove to be a very rewarding experience as you watch your feathered visitors take a break when they stop in for a meal. They attract more variety of birds than the other types of feeders so depending on where you live you may see jays, doves, blackbirds, finches, sparrows to name only a few.
