Sixteen Tons (16 tons) is a song about the life of a miner, first in 1946 by American country singer Merle Travis recorded and released on his album Folk Songs of the Hills box the following year. 1955 version of Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded reached number one on Billboard, while another version of Frankie Laine was just in the UK, where Ford has released version some stiff competition. Existence of a dispute concerning the authorship of "Sixteen Tons." Whilethe song is usually attributed to Merle Travis, who had his record in 1947, George S. Davis, a folk singer and songwriter, a miner in Kentucky, had claimed credit, if it was for Folkways Records in 1966 wrote to have the song as "Nine of ten tons in 1930. Recording Davis' version of the song appears George Davis on the albums: When Kentucky Had No Union Men and Classic Mountain Songs from Smithsonian. In 1955 Sixteen Tons Tennessee by DateErnie Ford, at the end of 1970, when Colonel CAF Ford has the title of the organization "Ghost Squadron of the ballad." Runway Over the years Ford has been awarded three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for radio, records, and television.
