Attracting Hummingbirds to Your Garden

Hummingbirds are a very unique and delightful bird to have in your garden. They can be found all over America. Hummingbirds are a great addition to any lawn and garden space and can be quite entertaining for most people. That's why I would like to share with you how you can attract more of this intriguing specie of bird to your garden.

Some of the greatest features of a hummingbird are not known to many people. They can flap their wings up to amazing speeds as fast as 80 times per second. Because of this, hummingbirds have a very fast metabolism, in fact the fastest of all birds. In order to sustain their high metabolism, they need to feed off hundreds of flowers a day. This allows them to consume food and nutrients in excess of their own body weight. The smallest bird in the world is the Bee Hummingbird at 2" long and weighing in at 1.8 grams. The largest hummingbird in the world is the Giant Hummingbird weighing in at about 24 grams and 8" long. Hummingbirds are able to decrease their metabolism just by sitting unlike other high metabolism animals. This allows them to lengthen their lifespan up to 17 years of life. Can you imagine a bird that is 17 years old? That's amazing!

First of all, hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors and a variety of them. They have a poor sense of smell, but love colors. There are some plants you may want to consider planting in your garden that will provide just this. For annuals, try the salvia, petunia, impatiens, firespike and jewelweed. Some perennials to consider using are bee balm, costa, yucca, canna, lupine, cardinal flower and faxglove. The trees and shrubs that work best include the azalea, buddleia, cape honeysuckle, mimosa, weigela, flame acanthus, lantana, red buckeye and tree tobacco. Hummingbirds also eat bugs and insects so avoid using any pesticides. It is also a good idea to incorporate places to rest for your hummingbirds as they do so 80% of their time. Examples would be clothes lines, tree branches, bird houses, fences, garden statues, etc. Female hummingbirds are always looking for nesting materials. They usually like soft materials from willow or eucalyptus trees or mosses, lichens, and ferns. In terms of hummingbird feeders and their locality in your garden there is a lot to consider. Because hummingbirds prefer bright colors, try using an assortment of different brightly colored feeders and/or you can decorate around them using streamers or wind spinners. You'll want to position the bird feeders at various heights in your garden. Hummingbirds can be very territorial, which is quite amusing to watch. Another thing that hummingbirds enjoy is a cool mist, usually from wet tree leaves, but you can incorporate this using a mister in your garden.

What else attracts hummingbirds that is sweet and tasty? Nectar can be store bought or home-made. Just mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts boiled water. Mix well and let cool before putting into bird feeder. It is a good idea not to use synthetic sugars or food coloring. Also, do not substitute sugar with honey as it can ferment and produce fungus that is harmful to the bird. Keep the feeder out of the sun if possible and make sure to change the nectar about 2-3 times a week. Clean your bird feeder once a week using 1 cup vinegar to 4 cups water, then a rinse through with just water.

Hummingbirds are a wonderful way to decorate your garden and by following these tips you should be off to a great start providing the ideal territory for this specie of bird. Sit back and enjoy all the entertainment these birds can provide. They are truly a delight to have in your garden and your family and friends will think so too.

What Do You Do If You Get Stuck on the Beach?

If you have a four wheel drive and you go off road at all you are almost guaranteed to get stuck on the beach at some stage. However, if you have learned what it is that you should be doing you will reduce the chance dramatically. Beach Driving techniques are built up based on the car that you drive and the beach that you are on. Some beaches are rock hard, whilst others are so soft that you wouldn't want to drive on them at all.

If however, you do get stuck on the beach the first thing to do is to relax and consider your options. Even if the water is close to your vehicle, running around in a panic will usually keep you in the same location for longer, and cause you even more problems. Think about the types of recovery gear that you have, other four wheel drives that can pull you out, the tire pressures that you are running, and whether you have a shovel.

As a general rule I would suggest that you let your tires down even more than what they are at. You can go as low as 8 PSI in your tires if you want, but make sure you don't turn quickly like this or you will pop the tire off the bead. Let your tires down 5 PSI at a time to see how it goes. If you are at 20, drop it down to 15 and give it another go. Before you try again though, dig a bit of the sand out from around the wheels to give the car a helping hand.

Remember though that prevention is better than cure; let your tires down from the start and if you start to sink stop spinning the wheels! Having the right 4wd Accessories will help you get out, like a snatch strap, rated recovery points, Max Trax, Shovel and wider tires.

Hurting His Heart (The 3 H Syndrome)

Remember the day you fell in love with your boyfriend or girlfriend? I'm talking about so much that all you wanted to do is be with them, talk to them and you just couldn't wait for that day to stand and say, "i do" to them.

The thought of that person leaving you or cheating on you was like someone taking your heart out of your chest. We're talking about some deep and passionate love here!

What about those of you that profess to be Christians? To be a real christian is not just a good god bless you and the good deeds you do. That is not even the surface of it. Yet, it's a spiritual deep and sold out love to Jesus Christ. Every time, we give our phones, music, computers, iPods and people more time/reference we hurt God's heart. Every time you won't forgive your brother or sister, you hurt God's heart. Every time you say you love God, but won't let go of fornication, lying, stealing, nasty attitudes, failure to pray/read the word, and spend quality time seeking God, you hurt his heart.

You may say that's too deep and not true! Well why does Jesus say on the last day that those who stand on his left will be condemned to hell? In the verses noted below we see that we can go to hell for not going to the prisons and helping the needy. See folks its not the individuals, but we are in essence doing that to god.

The next time you walk pass the thirsty and the hungry and its in your power to feed them, and you do not do it...Remember, it's God's heart your breaking. If you knew how awesome and loving the father is you would be on your knees crying like I am now about the thought of hurting our fathers heart. Let's destroy this 3h syndrome (hurting his heart). God really loves you! Lets really love him back!

Bird Feeders - Correct Placement For Cardinals

To encourage Northern Cardinals, sometimes named Red Birds, to feed and remain around your home, setting up a small sized fly through feeder near any good source of cover will work perfectly. It is the protective cover of good dense vegetation that is key to holding cardinals. At my home, I have allowed a large bramble to grow out of control specifically for the birds and it now covers about 400 square feet in the middle of the yard. Fortunately, my wife loves the birds too and approves of the big bramble. In the wintertime it is common to have 6 to 12 pairs of mated cardinals enjoying the protective cover of the bramble. From their protected haven, a small pole mounted fly through feeder is just twenty feet away. Although there are several other feeders located within easy reach of the bramble, the fly through is used in turn all day long by each of the cardinals.

If you do not have or do not wish to have a big messy bramble in your yard, set up a good cardinal feeder close to any kind of vegetative cover. It can be as simple as a large bush or close to a grove of trees. Any type of cover will attract and hold cardinals. The more there is, the dense it is, the messier it is, the better. As in my own case, there is nothing more picturesque than the bramble covered in fresh snow dotted with the beauty of our ever loved Red Birds. Seek good cover for your bird feeder and the cardinals will follow soon.

Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder - Customer Reviews For Two Decades

The Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder is unique in its design and deterrence. The biggest difference between the Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder and other brands of squirrel proof bird feeders on the market is the immediate, corrective action. With feeders that rely on cages and weight activation mechanisms, squirrels need to learn on their own that birdseed rewards are not possible. To learn this, squirrels need to grip, hang and chew on the squirrel proof bird feeders for multiple visits before they realize that the energy they are expending to receive birdseed is not being rewarded. However, with the Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder, the stinging response is immediate and effective.

A mild, corrective sting keeps critters off the feeder the instant squirrels touch two metal parts on the feeder. The reason birds are not able to receive this sting is due to their physiological makeup. You see, a birds beak and feet are made of cartilage, bone if you will. Electricity is conducted through our blood vessels, not our bone structure. Birds bodies are covered with feathers, which do not contain exposed blood vessels, either. A mammals skin has exposed blood vessels near the surface, which is sufficient for conductivity on the bird feeder. The sting is not harmful, about the same as a static charge you get when you grab a metal doorknob after walking on a carpet in your stocking feet.

What does all this mean to you? Any mammal that comes in contact with two different metal parts on the this bird feeder will receive the corrective sting. From the top or bottom, the Wild Bills Bird Feeder is protected from squirrels. Humans, however, know where the on/off switch is located! We can turn the feeder off without stinging ourselves to fill and clean.

Does all this complicated circuitry really work to keep squirrels from stealing all the birdseed? According to our huge customer base and two decades of experiences, the honest answer is yes and no. The large 8 port Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder has a generous 10lb. capacity. The huge 12 port model can hold up to 20lbs. Each model has metal perches, metal trays on the bottom, metal hangars and metal parts on the top dome. The squirrels will be able to eat off the bottom tray, without touching a second metal part. For some people, unfortunately, this means the feeder is not 100% squirrel proof. For others, protecting the huge 10lb. & 20lb. seed chambers are the main goals. If the squirrels can only eat the seed droppings on the bottom tray, these customers are quite content with the Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders.

Each Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder operates through the use of a single 9-volt battery. Each model only uses the battery upon a mammals touching of the two metal parts we have discussed. How many times the circuits are used will determine the life of the 9-volt battery. We have discovered that the first one or two months of introducing the Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder to your backyard, these batteries will need to be changed about 2-3 times. This is the training period for your squirrels. Squirrels are not sadistic creatures. They do not enjoy pain and will not return to test the feeders after about 3-4 attempts. Since each squirrel in your area will have to be taught about this new stinging device, we estimate that by the end of the second month, batteries are on stand-by only. We only change our battery about 3 times per year. Our local critters know about the penalty for trying to steal birdseed from our Wild Bills Feeder. Nighttime raids by raccoons can drain the batteries faster, depending on the number of visitors you get each night, if at all.

There is not such thing as a 100% squirrel proof bird feeder. Our long experience has shown us that at sometime, somewhere, somehow, a squirrel will receive a birdseed reward for their diligence on any squirrel proof bird feeder. If your desire is to purchase a squirrel proof bird feeder that squirrels can not own, then the Wild Bills Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder, with its immediate stinging, will give you years of stress-free pleasure. Now you can use your highest quality wild bird seed mixes and know that all those sunflower seeds and specialty tree nut are attracting the colorful songbirds you miss so much. Birds rule and critters drool!

All About Dog Poop!

Oops, what's that? Dog poop on my shoe?

Nothing has a greater capacity to ruin your day than getting dog poop on your shoes. It's not a pleasing prospect for you or your children to inadvertently step in some dog's poop. Imagine yourself all dressed in your Sunday finery on your way to church, or your kids playing in the park. It can and has happened to everyone.

The bigger problem is "dog poop health issues". Anyone who steps in dog poop is very likely to transfer it to their hands and their clothing while trying to remove it.

But that's not the half of it, the worst part is that dog poop often contains harmful germs, bacteria and parasites, diseases that can put your kids and other pets at risk for infection.

The good news is that modern day "pooper scooper" laws require pet owners to clean up after their pet makes a mess. Of course there are some folk who ignore these laws and let it lay where it drops. On the other hand people can usually be counted on to be good citizens and the large majority of pet owners do accept their responsibilities, law or no law. They are considerate of their neighbors and communities and they are concerned about the health and cleanliness of their environments. They clean up after themselves and their dogs.

Very often while out walking you will see a dog having a poop on the street or sidewalk while the owner is apparently oblivious to the act. He's inspecting the building on the other side of the street or studying local cloud formations.

If you see someone like this, it is appropriate to politely call the dog owners attention to the poop left by his dog and suggest that he clean it up. Dog crap left to rot in public places is appalling at best. Some groups urge you to clean up other people's dog poop for the sake and well-being of the community.

This may make some people uneasy. However, there are many tools available, pooper scoopers, plastic bags from the grocery store, and paper towels, as well as a variety of rake and shovel combinations. It's getting easier and easier to be a model citizen, so there is no real reason to leave your dog's poop for someone else to step in (or to clean up).

The cheapest way to be a good citizen is to use the plastic bags. Turn the bag inside out, insert your hand and pick up the poop. Close the bag and tie a knot in the top. Dump it in the nearest garbage can. Used bread bags and the plastic bags your newspaper are delivered in are excellent alternatives. They are free pooper scoopers - heavy enough, strong enough, and big enough to do the job. Please don't put these bags in with your recycling.

Being proactive in removing your dog's crap will go a long way in protecting the health, safety, and beauty of your community.

Free Bird Feeder Plans

When you start in the summer, it's so nice to see everything in bloom. Another great thing to wake up to the sweet sound of birds. However, not all are blessed with that luxury. If you have a hard time attracting birds to your backyard, you will definitely think about a bird table. Here you are free bird feeder plans, I know you like to Observe the bird, right from your backyard.

Everythingneed is

Or you could
or screen
wood or
or a tape
A hammer or
or nails
O-terminal and / or vice versa handle
or levels of
A marker or

The size of your bird feeder to determine the screen size, wood and materials needed to build niches.

Step One:

Measure your wood to the size of the bird feeder like to enjoy. Be sure to keep in mind thatScreen fits within these pieces. Note that the bars are smaller pieces of their length. You want to make a rectangular frame. I suggest you do the length of a foot, and sides at least half a foot long.

Support the bird table, so you want to build legs for it, which is the ground for about half a foot. You can do it with plywood for both sides to do.

Step Two:

After measuring thePieces according to a regular cut or a chainsaw, if formed in one piece, from which the pieces are the images and legs.

Step Three:

You need to create grooves on the inner side of each leg to push your screen. You can use a saw to this, only the edges measured on the screen to find the size of groove. It's OK if the ball a bit 'bigger than the rest of the screen was still on the ball. Just make sure you can slide the screen andout.

Step Four:

Now you are ready for assembly to the frame. Use the nails on the sides to ensure the long part of the frame. Then after that we want is complete, you are going to put the legs of the frame so that standing. They will do this by nailing the feet on the side of the chassis frame. Remember where you put your groove, want to see how the leg as high as possible, so that the screen is located near the top of the frame power.

StepFive:

Now you have built the power, simply slide the tray, place the bird on your attempt. Being able to solve an interesting feature is that you can have it cleaned. Now you are finally ready to find a place for it. Congratulations to build your own shuttle service from your Free Bird Feeder Plans. Relax after a few days there will be a lot of different birds every seen.

Have Fun With a Garden Bird Feeder

Want to decorate your garden with birds of different species whose sounds all the time, the colors that are offered to the feeder in the garden was the answer to your question? The investor assumes not only the birds in the winter with food, but also during the incubation period with abundant food. Therefore, the seeds in the magazine can help overcome this deficit birds.

Many times you will notice that, although the linesin the garden, you hardly see any birds that visit. Well, the answer lies in why the fact that the position of the investors must be completely wrong. The birds are generally very reserved and not visit a place, if it is kept open. However, some species of birds are hungry for nature, is to visit frequently, but the birds, the hungry will not stay away from food gardens. Thus, it is recommended that there are investors in an open spaceInstead, they produce on small trees and possibly a nearby fence, or mounted on a tree or pole. Many people make the mistake of feeding in the garden, but remember you are in this thing can create uncertainty in birds, and they come back from.

Well, as we have people like to eat different types of food that is our nature. Here, among the birds, we also have many birds with different dietary habits, a small research on the same will help us. While working onUse of the Bird Garden table, we must take care of their eating habits. Following is a brief on it.

Type of food that must be taken in different seasons, provided that the power supply in the garden:

In summer, the requirements of different birds tend to eat high protein. The best thing to do for you what is your order feeder with raisins, sunflower seeds, mealworms, cheese, etc.

food for birds prefer fruitsany kind of fruits like grapes, apples, pears or bananas will be of great help.

During the winter season, it is preferred that the seeds/insects or fruits be put twice in a day as they need a lot of energy to survive through the ordeal.

Things to consider while using a garden feeder:-

The first thing that you need to pay attention is the look of the feeder; it should gel into your garden. If it looks hideous then, you should ideally avoid it and buy something which suits or fits your garden.

Secondly you should think about the kind of feeder that you want, like the traditional feeder which has the provision of multi seeds. This multi seed helps in attracting a variety of birds as you can put in many seeds in it.

Squirrel proofing is one another area of concern. Whatever; you get to see to that it is protected against squirrel attacks they form a competition to the birds.

Also you can think about a lighted feeder, which can be charged by battery.

Watching birds in your background is a pleasure and nobody wants to lose them.

Bird Field Guides - Using Visual Clues For Bird Identification

I am often asked why bird field guides are so hard to use and how to know where to start looking in the field guide when a person finds a bird in the field or yard. Learning how to group birds by visual clues can go a long way toward bird identification and will give you a clue as to where to start looking in your field guide. The information in this article may be utilized with any field guide you might have and I will try to present it without using scientific terms that may confuse the novice birder.

The first group of birds in most field guides would be the "swimmers." These birds are generally found swimming in waterways or lakes, although they may sometimes be observed grazing around lakes or in fields. In the later case webbed feet would be obvious. This group consists of geese, swans and ducks.

The next group of birds would be the "aerialists." These birds are most often observed flying over or around water. Many of them are fish eaters and may be seen diving or skimming over the top of the water and then returning to the air. Visual clues would be the proximity to water and their habit of spending much of their time in the air. These clues would lead you to the gulls, terns, shearwaters, petrels and albatrosses.

If you see a bird wading near the shore look at its legs. Are they long or short? If you can not see the legs look at the neck. Is it long or short? The next grouping of birds in the field guides are the "long legged waders." Visual clues would be the long legs and long necks and proximity to water. This groups consists of herons, egrets, cranes, ibis and the storks.

As long as we are on the shore, the next group would also be waders. These birds are much smaller than the "long legged waders" above. The neck is more in proportion with the bird's body and the legs, while being long for a bird, are not as long as the last group. These waders would include the plovers and sandpipers. This group can be further separated down by visual clues. The plovers have more compact necks and a bill like a pigeon while the sandpipers have slightly elongated necks and a longer pointed bill like a woodpecker.

The next general group in the bird books would be the fowl-like birds. These birds have a chicken-like build, have long or short tails and are most often found in fields or open woodlands. These birds most often freeze, walk or run away from danger. Flight is a last resort for this group which includes turkeys, pheasants, grouse, partridges and quail.

The next group is often observed soaring in the air or perched on telephone poles or fence posts. These are the birds of prey. Look for hooked beaks and strong legs and claws in this group which consists of the hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures.

The nonpasserine birds come next in the field guides. These consist of the kingfishers, pigeons, doves, parrots, cuckoos, roadrunners, nighthawks, swifts, hummingbirds and woodpeckers. Most of these birds are noted for having calls rather than melodious songs. Visual clues for pigeons, doves, nighthawks, swifts and hummingbirds would include short legs and very small feet. Woodpeckers and roadrunners are so specialized in appearance and habitat they are generally some of the easier birds to classify into groups.

The last group covered in the field guides are the passerine or "perching" birds. This group covers almost half of the birds in the world. They all have three toes pointing forward and one toe pointed backwards to allow these birds to perch upon vertical surfaces such as tree branches. For the most part, these birds are songbirds. Visual clues for this group includes the ability to land on narrow surfaces such as tree branches and the audio clue of a melodious song.

Not every group of birds is included in this basic bird classification attempt. However, I hope that it will assist the beginning birder to turn to the correct section of their field guide when they spot a bird in the field or yard. Remember: Not even the best professional ornithologist can identify every bird every time. The joy of bird watching is that you have a chance to learn something every time you go into the field or look into your backyard and that is what makes birding a lifelong activity.

pileated woodpecker at bird agriculturalist in Muskoka

The pileated woodpecker made us a visit. It parked itself on the railing in the snow, then climbed up the tree. It ended up on the bird feeder, swinging madly. The music is the late Oliver Schroer's "The Colour of Snow".

Attracting Wild Birds in Your Backyard

Have you ever considered buying a bird feeder to attract wild birds in your backyard? How much are you willing to pay for it? $30? $50? More? Can you imagine that for $50 you could potentially build ten or even more bird feeders? Just think about the number of birds you can actually charm with ten feeders rather than just one.

There are numerous great and impressive yard bird products available today. However to tell the truth, birds basically care about the food or the feeder itself, not the wrapper.

While creating a feeding location, you could invest hundreds of dollars for some bird feeders, birdbaths, and birdhouses. Creating your own bird feeders, birdbaths, birdhouses, as well as bird foods will save you lots of money. You may also build a big bird feeding station that will attract a lot more wild birds.

I have treasured bird watching in my backyard or in the wild for quite some time. My first bird feeder was of an Opus design. This plastic-type lantern molded feeder sat on a hollow, steel pole that stuck in the ground. It was not long before squirrels had chewed on one side, doing deadly damage to my feeder.

Given that I wanted to attract lots of wild birds I would buy cheap feeders. Silly me! Most of them were destroyed by wild animals.

I finally decided to build my own bird feeders. I was not very pleased with my first do-it-yourself beeder project. It was a log type bird feeder and after I completed my project, I was thinking that it did not really appear to be a bird feeder. I was wondering what kind of birds this feeder was going to appeal to. I put it up in my backyard and, I am happy to report that within half an hour I was watching my first visitor feeding, a cardinal. Wow! I was very thrilled.

From that day, I have built many different types of bird feeders from high quality woodworking plans and I have to say that I am very satisfied with my end products as well as my wild bird watching. But I will never forget that first visitor feeding from my not so good looking feeder I had just made. It was just awesome! For great results on any of your woodworking projects remember to always use high quality woodworking plans.

Railroad Tracks For Railroad Modeling

The joy of collecting trains is incomplete if you just let them collect dust on table tops or display shelves. These models need to be run! That's what makes them so special and nothing brings these trains to life like a well made railroad layout. For that reason, in the world of model railroading, you can never forget about your model railroad tracks.

Trains are designed to be run so they need tracks. Since the trains come in different scales, the tracks to accommodate them do as well. Usually the scale letter (O, HO, and N) is also the corresponding track gauge (example: an O scale train will need an O gauge track to run on). This gauge is actually the distance between the two metal rails that the train's wheels go into. Only trains designed to go on the specific gauge can run on that specific gauge track. The N scale, for example, is actually named after the gauge. N in N scale stands for nine millimeter, which is the approximate gauge of the tracks N scale models run on. Scales and track gauges are not the same thing though. Some trains are said to be in a semi-scale. These models are in the same size as other trains but have wider or narrower wheels to accommodate a different gauge.

Once you're certain of your gauges, you can start getting the tracks you need. Make sure you get the right number of rails though! Some tracks have three rails, the extra rail in the middle. This is because manufacturers found that using three rails gave better electrical grounding, reducing short circuits. They also found that wiring three rails into the other accessories on the train set was easier. This gave three rail trains the ability to activate certain accessories as they passed. Despite their advantages, the third rail is unrealistic for many hobbyists and many still prefer the two rail tracks. It's up to you though. Just be sure your trains and tracks go together as trains designed for three rail tracks will not operate on two rail tracks without being modified.

Tracks are usually bought in segments. These smaller tracks are then pieced together to make an entire railroad layout. The basic building blocks for these segmented track layouts are the straight segments and the curved segments. With just these two types of track segments, you can already create a basic circular track that ensures your train keeps running. It is rare that you would just want a circular track though. Fortunately, the hobby has grown to cater even the most particular of tastes. There are crossings and switches readily available to make the rail road of your dreams a reality. There are even folding bridges and special tracks that animate some of your train's functions, like automatically decoupling cars, available on the market today.

There are also flexible tracks now available. These flex tracks come in long track ways that can be bent into any curve or shape you want. Although segmented tracks are very easy to use, they can be limiting because they come in preset shapes. However, before you go crazy bending your tracks; you have to know more about the maximum turn radius of your train. Curved segments are preset because they cater to the maximum safe curve radius their corresponding trains can handle. If you go beyond that radius, your trains might derail when they try to traverse your curve.

The last piece of track you have to have is the feeder track. This segment may be the most important since it connects the track to the power source.

Once you have all of your tracks, you can start building your own layout. If you're just starting out, simple is probably best. But don't let potential derailments and minor accidents stop you from taking risks. One way to make sure your layout works is to test it before you glue it on to a miniature set. Work out the kinks and once everything is running smooth, then glue it. This way, you won't have to be overly cautious when designing the layout of your dreams.
